To Enclose, Deprive of Light, Hide reflects on the first wave of the pandemic, when social distancing and isolation for the sake of the common good were still new experiences for many. The sense of loneliness that emerged stood in contrast to the online display of our private lives, in a collective search for connection. The installation took place in The Eye at the Van Abbemuseum, where the glass wall functioned as a so-called “fourth wall,” a concept derived from theatre. As a museum visitor, one could observe events on the set that remained invisible to the characters in the patio. The Eye thus became a refuge in which, over the course of six months, I created space for an improvised video work.
